“Extra Help” Program
Anyone who has Medicare can get Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) but some people with limited resources and income may also be able to get Extra Help. This Extra Help Program will help pay for costs, such as monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription copayments. People with Medicare who apply for the Extra Help program and qualify for benefits may save an estimated $4,000 per year on medication co-pay deductibles*.
You can apply for Extra Help online using link. To schedule an appointment or to apply for Extra Help over the phone, contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., or contact your local Social Security office.
Medicare Savings Program
States help pay some of the Medicare costs for beneficiaries who have limited income and resources. Under these programs, states help pay for Medicare Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles and/or copayments. Some of these programs also pay additional Medicare expenses for elderly and disabled people.
The Medicare Savings Program may also pay:
Deductibles
Portions of coinsurance for services covered by Part B
Hospital deductibles
Daily coinsurance for extended hospital and skilled nursing facility stays
In order to apply, you must meet income requirements and you must be eligible to receive Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance). Even if you don’t have Part A because you cannot afford it, there is a program that may pay the Medicare Part A premium for you.
